Johnny Manziel replaces Josh McCown after shoulder injury vs. Rams

Johnny Manziel went in for the Browns against the Rams.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown left Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams with a shoulder injury. McCown ran into a wall earlier in the game and was trying to shake his arm loose at the end of the play. He stayed in the game until the fourth quarter and eventually left with an injury after taking several big hits.

On Monday, McCown underwent an MRI on his shoulder. “Josh will be day to day with a shoulder injury. More than likely we’ll hold him on Wednesday. We’ll see how he progresses later in the week,” head coach Mike Pettine said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “We have to protect this guy. You can’t have your quarterback go through a game like that.”

Johnny Manziel replaced McCown late in the fourth quarter with the Browns trailing 24-6. McCown had completed 26 of 32 passes for 270 yards when he left the game. He was sacked four times for a loss of 15 yards. In addition to the shoulder injury, he was also checked for a concussion after the game, but was cleared.

The quarterback doesn’t have to worry about keeping his starting role when he returns. When asked on Monday, Pettine was emphatic, “If our starting quarterback is physically able to play, will we play him? Yes.”

As the starting quarterback, McCown has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 1,686 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He has just three interceptions and has played about as well as expected when the team signed him as a free agent this offseason.

Manziel has already played in three games due to injury this season and would likely get the start if McCown couldn’t play. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 27 yards against the Rams and for the season, he’s thrown for 381 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
