San Francisco 49ers starting running back Carlos Hyde has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. Hyde is dealing with a stress fracture in his left foot and missed all three days of practice this week.
49ers RB Carlos Hyde ruled out for Rams game with foot injury
Hyde has a stress fracture and will miss the NFC West showdown against the Rams on Sunday.
Despite missing the sessions, it still came as a surprise that the 49ers ruled him out for the game on Sunday, as many expected Hyde to get a chance to test his foot prior to the NFC West showdown. Head coach Jim Tomsula said on Friday that the team planned to make a decision 90 minutes before kickoff prior to the injury report being released.
It’s probably a good thing for Hyde and the 49ers overall in the long run. The team has not been very competitive this season with Hyde being one of the lone bright spots, and he’s already played through the injury this year. Time to heal up is a good thing, and with a bye week coming in Week 10, Hyde may get an even longer rest.
Hyde's primary backup is Reggie Bush, who was brought in this offseason. Bush has just eight carries for 28 yards this season. Behind him is rookie Mike Davis and Rugby League convert Jarryd Hayne. Davis has 15 carries for 20 yards, while Hayne has eight carries for 25 yards. Hayne was inactive for the first time last week, but with Hyde being out he's sure to play on Sunday.
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is second on the team with 228 rushing yards, well behind Hyde's 470 yards and three touchdowns. This is Hyde's first season as a starter after taking over for Frank Gore, who left this offseason to join the Indianapolis Colts. Hyde has shown flashes of brilliance, including a 168-yard performance against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1.
The team will be much better off when he can return.
