The Dallas Cowboys could replace quarterback Brandon Weeden with Matt Cassel if he struggles going forward. Weeden is starting in place of an injured Tony Romo, but it appears the Cowboys lack confidence in him following the team's loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.
Cowboys could turn to Matt Cassel if Brandon Weeden falters
Matt Cassel may be starting for the Cowboys sooner rather than later if Brandon Weeden doesn’t lead the team to wins while Tony Romo is out.
The Cowboys play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night, and if Weeden doesn't play well, it wouldn't be surprising to see Cassel play. If the Cowboys elect to give Weeden a full start, Cassel could wind up taking over in Week 5 though, as some believe it's "only a matter of time" before Cassel takes over for Weeden as the starter, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
There are concerns that Weeden will struggle “communicating and understanding” Rob Ryan’s complex defense against the Saints, as that type of thing isn’t his strength, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. If you couple that with the fact that it’s Weeden’s first road start in a hostile environment, the potential for a poor showing is certainly there.
Weeden has done little to get the confidence of Dallas coaches thus far. In his first start in Week 3, the Cowboys fell to the Falcons while Weeden failed to pass for a touchdown. He completed 22 of 26 passes, a solid 84.6 completion percentage, but he did not have a touchdown and he had a crucial interception. In relief of Romo against the Philadelphia Eagles, he completed all seven of his passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. In other words, Weeden has protected the ball, but the Cowboys don't necessarily have faith that he'll respond well in a tough environment.
Cassel spent his offseason in a quarterback battle with the Buffalo Bills, but lost out to Tyrod Taylor. He last played in the regular season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, playing in three games, completing 41 of 71 passes for 425 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
