Chargers WR Keenan Allen will miss rest of 2015 with lacerated kidney

Allen was placed on injured reserve after undergoing a kidney procedure.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen is out for the rest of the season after undergoing a procedure on a lacerated kidney, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. On Tuesday, the Chargers officially placed him on injured reserve, a day before coach Mike McCoy announced that Allen would miss time. Allen is expected to make a full recovery.

Allen, 23, suffered the injury on a diving touchdown reception in a 29-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and was declared questionable to return due to back spasms. It was one of several injuries suffered by the Chargers on Sunday, with players like King Dunlap and Jason Verrett also leaving the game early.

A third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Allen had solid statistics in his first two seasons with the Chargers but has broken out in a big way in 2015. Through the first eight weeks, only Julio Jones has more receptions than Allen, who has racked up 67 receptions for 725 yards and four touchdowns for the Chargers.

The loss of Allen will be costly for the Chargers as Stevie Johnson is the second-most targeted receiver on the team with only 24 receptions for 283 yards. Danny Woodhead, Ladarius Green and Antonio Gates are often targeted by Philip Rivers, but players like Johnson and Malcom Floyd will be asked to do more in Allen's absence.

Through eight weeks, the Chargers are No. 1 in yards per game but only No. 14 in points scored. San Diego will face the 2-5 Chicago Bears in Week 9 before a Week 10 bye.
