Patriots place RB Dion Lewis on injured reserve with torn ACL

Lewis was having a big year for the Patriots but he is now done for the rest of the season.

New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis left the team's game against Washington with a knee injury on Sunday and an MRI on Monday showed that he suffered an ACL tear. On Monday evening, the Patriots placed Lewis on season-ending injured reserve.

Lewis went down with a non-contact injury and immediately held his left knee. Trainers came out onto the field to look at him. He eventually got up and walked off the field under his own power, but walked straight to the locker room.

The Patriots announced that Lewis would not return to the game due to the knee injury.

Lewis had four carries for 14 yards before leaving Sunday's game. He also caught four passes for 39 yards. He was a big part of New England's offense this season and although LeGarrette Blount is the starting running back and leads the team with 447 yards and five touchdowns, Lewis contributed too with 49 carries for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

Lewis represented much more than a running back for the Patriots offense, too. On a team that features Tom Brady at quarterback, Lewis caught 36 passes for 388 yards and two touchdowns, making him third on the team behind only Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski from a yardage standpoint.

Lewis is playing in his fifth season and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
