Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib has been suspended one game for poking Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen in the eye late in a Week 9 loss. He will have to sit out Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Talib appealed the suspension, which was held up on Tuesday.

The league said that Talib “placed his opponent at unnecessary risk of injury.” The suspension will cost him a week of pay, or $351,102.

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak told reporters on Monday that Talib was in the wrong for getting in between Allen and Von Miller, but also defended the cornerback's intent.

"He's wrong. He needs to stay out of the situation and he knows that," Kubiak said. "I'm convinced after talking with Aqib, he had no intention of poking anyone in the eye."

Talib

Talib called it an "honest mistake" after the game, although he also accused Allen of overacting to sell the penalty. The penalty wiped out a third-down situation for the Colts and instead gave the team a fresh set of downs. Another penalty a couple of minutes later gave Indianapolis another first down and the Broncos' offense never got the ball again in the 27-24 loss.

On Monday, Talib reiterated that it wasn’t intentional, though he was more contrite about the incident:

Bradley Roby will likely start in Talib’s place in Week 10 against the Chiefs.
