The New Orleans Saints have signed running back C.J. Spiller, according to Adam Schefter. Spiller joins a crowded position group for New Orleans after the team re-signed Mark Ingram earlier this month.
Saints sign C.J. Spiller, according to report
The former Bills running back played in just nine games in 2014 due to injuries.
Spiller is coming off his least productive season since his rookie year, as he was limited to just nine games in 2014 because of injuries. He finished with 300 yards rushing on 78 carries, and also caught 19 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown.
The Bills reportedly offered Spiller a deal worth $4.5 million annually, but he turned it down. The team went on to trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for All-Pro tailback LeSean McCoy. With McCoy in tow, Buffalo no longer had use for Spiller and ceased their pursuit.
When healthy, Spiller is one of the most explosive backs in the league. From 2011-13, he averaged 5.3 yards per rush, easily the best mark among all running backs. His best season came in 2012 when he gained 1,703 yards from scrimmage, averaging 6.0 yards per rush and 10.4 yards per reception. However, there are legitimate concerns about his consistency and durability. He averaged just 703 total yards in his other four NFL seasons and has never started a full 16-game slate in his career.
The 27-year-old was a first-round pick of the Bills in 2010, and became a free agent this winter after his five-year, $25.7 million rookie contract expired at the end of the season.
