Stefen Wisniewski has finally found a new team, signing a one-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced on Saturday. The one-year deal is worth $2.5 million, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.
Stefen Wisniewski signs 1-year deal with Jaguars
Stefen Wisniewski joins the Jaguars’ offseason haul, signing a one-year deal.
Wisniewski was the best player remaining in free agency, but was on the open market for so long due to offseason surgery on his shoulder. He’s one of the better centers in the league, and a one-year deal is essentially an opportunity for him to prove that his shoulder is good to go.
Wisniewski came available after the expiration of his rookie contract. Oakland reportedly made multiple offers to retain the young center, but he instead decided to test the open market. This marks the second consecutive year that the Raiders have lost important homegrown talents, following an offseason where Jared Veldheer and Lamarr Houston departed for better situations.
Wisniewski joined the Raiders in 2011 as a second-round selection and started all but three games during the time since. Though not as well-known as the Matthews, he comes from an NFL family. His father Leo played nose tackle for four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts in the early 1980s, while his uncle Steve was an All-Pro and 1990s All-Decade Team guard for the Raiders.
Provided Wisniewski recovers from his injury and returns to form, he should have no issues landing a multi-year contract sooner rather than later.
