2015 NFL Draft results: Maxx Williams picked by Ravens in 2nd round

Williams goes to the Ravens, giving Joe Flacco a shiny new target.

With the No. 55 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Minnesota Golden Gophers tight end Maxx Williams. The tight end-needy Ravens traded up three spots with the Arizona Cardinals and were able to land Williams, who is almost universally believed to be the top tight end in this draft class and projects to be a high-impact player immediately.

Williams was a star at Minnesota over his two years, catching a combined 61 passes for 986 yards and 13 touchdowns. Williams, who came out as a redshirt sophomore, put on an impressive display in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against the Missouri Tigers this year, hauling in seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. In 2014, Williams was named a second-team All-American and All-Big Ten first-teamer, along with being a finalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end.

At the NFL Combine in February, Williams showed why he is considered the best tight end out of a fairly weak class. Williams ran the best 40-yard dash time at his position with a 4.78 while also notching bests in the vertical jump (34.5 inches), broad jump (117.0 inches) and 20-yard shuttle (4.37 seconds). However, some felt his attitude is really lacking after conducting interviews with Williams, according to an NFC regional scout, via NFL.com:

“That Minnesota tight end came across as all about himself from what people in our room said (at the combine). They were a little turned off by him.”
