Eagles sign recently unretired John Moffitt to 1-year deal

Soon after Moffitt announced his return to the NFL, the 28-year-old guard is headed to Philadelphia.

Last week, former Denver Broncos guard John Moffitt surprisingly came out of retirement after nearly a two-year-long absence from football. Now the 28-year-old is set to join the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year deal, according to Ross Jones of Fox Sports. Several teams were reportedly interested in signing Moffitt, including one of his former teams, the Seattle Seahawks. However, Moffitt "felt Philly was best fit/opportunity for him," per Jones.

UPDATE: The Eagles officially announced the signing Monday. Although contract terms were not disclosed, the one-year deal is reportedly worth a league minimum with no guaranteed money, despite offers from other teams like the Houston Texans:

The Eagles had an opening along their offensive line after they cut ties with Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis when the two sides couldn’t resolve their contract dispute.

Moffitt was officially released by the Broncos once he announced his return to the NFL. After playing just two games in Denver, Moffitt abruptly retired in November 2013 and said, “I’m ready to live a different kind of life.” Although he cited health concerns in his decision to move on from football, the offensive lineman also dealt with off-the-field issues including drug use and trouble with the law.

In March 2014, Moffitt was arrested again for drug possession and battery. He then entered rehab and got clean, eventually returning to training and now, the NFL.

Moffitt has played in 19 games with 15 starts in his career. He headed to Denver after spending his first two years with the Seahawks, who drafted him in the third round in 2011.
