Joey Porter fined $10,000 for being on field vs. Bengals

Adam Jones earned a 15-yard penalty when he got in Porter’s face, which set the Steelers up for a game-winning field goal.

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebackers coach Joey Porter drew a $10,000 fine for his involvement in an on-field skirmish with several Cincinnati Bengals that ended up setting up the Steelers for a game-winning field goal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Porter was on the field after a hit from Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict left wide receiver Antonio Brown injured on the field and in need of assistance from Steelers trainers. That's explicitly against NFL rules, which prohibit anybody but team attendants, trainers and substitute players from going on the field when there's an injury. Not even head coaches are allowed on the field to check on an injured player.

It's still unclear what interaction he had with Bengals defenders, but his presence on the field riled up a few, including defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry and cornerback Adam Jones, who was flagged for a dead-ball personal foul. The penalty set the Steelers up for a 35-yard field goal that gave them an 18-16 lead with just seconds left on the clock.

Porter played the first eight seasons of his NFL career for the Steelers before finishing his career with the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals. He joined the Steelers coaching staff as a defensive assistant in 2014 before he was promoted to outside linebackers coach in 2015.

Jones took to Instagram after the game to go on a profanity-laced rant about the penalty and Porter’s presence on the field, although he quickly took down the post.
