Chiefs vs. Falcons 2016 final score: Kansas City holds off Atlanta rally to win, 29-28

Travis Kelce and Eric Berry led the Chiefs to a crucial victory that affected the playoff race in both conferences.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons are both in hotly contested playoff races, so there was a lot on the line when the two teams met in Week 13. The game lived up to the hype and had all the drama of a postseason matchup, ending on a intercepted two-point conversion that gave the Chiefs a 29-28 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Falcons defense struggled to slow tight end Travis Kelce early, who torched the secondary for 56 receiving yards on Kansas City’s first drive of the game. By the final whistle, he had 140 receiving yards on eight receptions, marking his third consecutive 100-yard game.

But the talk of the game will be the play of Eric Berry, who was born and raised in Georgia and had the chance to play in Atlanta for the first time in his NFL career. He intercepted a pass from Matt Ryan in the second quarter and returned it for a touchdown to help give the Chiefs a 20-16 lead at halftime.

A 55-yard touchdown by Albert Wilson extended Kansas City’s lead to 27-16, but the Falcons came roaring back in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns that erased the lead and gave Atlanta a 28-27 advantage. That’s when Berry struck again with an interception on a two-point conversion and returned it 100 yards to give the Chiefs back the lead.

With the victory the Chiefs are 9-3 and comfortably in control of an AFC Wild Card berth. It’s even possible Kansas City could jump to the No. 2 seed and the lead in the AFC West if the Oakland Raiders can’t get past the Buffalo Bills.

For Atlanta, it’s a tough loss that not only knocks the team in the race for a first-round bye, but even puts the team in jeopardy of being caught by the surging Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Tampa Bay can get a win over the San Diego Chargers, the two teams will be tied at 7-5 for the NFC South lead with four weeks left to play.
