The biggest story surrounding the NFL Draft on Thursday were the bizarre posts on Laremy Tunsil’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, which showed him smoking marijuana from a gas mask and asking Ole Miss coaches for cash. But apparently the commissioner was oblivious to it all.
Roger Goodell says Laremy Tunsil’s disastrous night was ‘exciting’
The commissioner was very cavalier when he was asked Friday about Tunsil’s hacked social media accounts.
In an interview with ESPN’s Mike & Mike Friday, Goodell said he was unaware of Tunsil’s situation until later on in the evening. And once he did hear about it, Goodell said he was entertained by the whole ordeal.
“I think it’s what makes the draft so exciting,” Goodell said. “Clubs make decisions. Sometimes they take risks, sometimes they do the right things and sometimes they don’t. Hopefully he’s going to turn out to be a great young player.”
That's quite the cavalier response, considering Tunsil had an anonymous hacker try to ruin his life on national television. Though the Dolphins did select him with the No. 13 overall pick, Tunsil's slide cost him an estimated $7 million. But according to Goodell, that's all part of the show.
Whenever Goodell steps in front of a microphone, he always attempts to address questions in the most milquetoast fashion possible. But in this case, his flippant account of Tunsil’s evening may be the most revealing answer he’s ever given.
The well-being of players doesn’t matter to Goodell. They’re all pawns in this game, waiting to be shuffled around for the sake of stuffing the NFL’s multibillion-dollar coffers. Tunsil may have experienced a disastrous night, but man, did it produce dramatic TV.
That’s all Goodell and the protectors of the shield care about. Welcome to the NFL, kid.
