Linebacker Bjoern Werner is getting a chance to revive his NFL career after the Indianapolis Colts released him prior to free agency. Werner has signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced.
Jaguars add a pass rusher with signing of former Colts 1st-rounder Bjoern Werner
The 2013 first-round pick is getting another chance after being released by the Colts.

Werner was a first-round pick out of Florida State in 2013. It was an odd fit even at the time, since Werner was a 4-3 defensive end but the Colts intended to shift him to linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Werner never adjusted to the position switch and ended up being a bit player who doesn’t contribute on special teams. He was active for just 10 games in 2015, recording zero sacks. Werner has only 6.5 sacks in 38 career games.
Werner is just 25 years old and may yet end up being a late bloomer, particularly if the Jaguars play him at his more natural position. However, after three underwhelming years in Indy, it’ll be an uphill climb for him to realize the potential that made him a first-round pick in the first place.
The Jags expect Dante Fowler, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, to start at the Leo pass rushing end position, but Werner will provide depth and will be able to compete for playing time in that role.
Jacksonville has now added 10 defenders through the draft and free agency, not including undrafted free agents. The Jaguars finished the 2015 season tied for 20th in the league with 36 sacks.
