The Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys head into the second week of preseason looking to build off their performances from last week. They get the national spotlight when they face off at AT&T Stadium Friday night, airing on NFL Network.
Dolphins vs. Cowboys 2016 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch NFL preseason online
The Dolphins and Cowboys are set for a preseason matchup on NFL Network Friday evening.
The Dolphins started off the Adam Gase era with a bang, easily handling the New York Giants with a 27-10 win on the road. Ryan Tannehill only made a short cameo at the start of the game, but Matt Moore took over later on. Moore completed 10 of 14 passes for 122 yards, one touchdown and one interception, seemingly solidifying his grip on the No. 2 quarterback job.
Miami’s running back situation is one to watch in preseason, especially Friday night when Arian Foster is expected to make his debut with the Dolphins. They signed the veteran running back at the start of training camp and appear poised to make him the workhorse. Foster didn’t play in the first preseason game, but he seems ready to get back on the field after suffering a torn Achilles last year with the Houston Texans.
Second behind Foster is Jay Ajayi, who had a quiet game against the Giants with just two carries for 6 yards. Third-round rookie Kenyan Drake sat out the game with an injury, so leading the team in rushing was Isaiah Pead, a 2012 second-rounder who flopped with the St. Louis Rams. Pead had a solid outing with 10 carries for 50 yards, but he still has an uphill climb up the depth chart if he’s going to resurrect his career.
The Cowboys’ season went up in smoke last year when Tony Romo fractured his collarbone twice. They probably should’ve done more to shore up their backup quarterback situation in the offseason, but if last week was anything to go by, they may already have their man. Fourth-round rookie Dak Prescott managed to upstage No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, throwing for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-12 passing against the Los Angeles Rams.
Romo is expected to play briefly, but Prescott figures to get a big run again in the second preseason game, and if he continues to impress he could have the No. 2 job sewn up without much controversy.
The Cowboys won’t get to see Ezekiel Elliott in game action just yet. The No. 4 pick missed the first preseason game with a hamstring injury and even though he returned to practice this week, Alfred Morris will likely start in his place again. Last week, Morris had a respectable showing with three carries for 11 yards, but Dallas is hoping the rookie will be able to make his NFL debut next week and prove he’s worth the hype.
One player who didn’t get the veteran treatment in the preseason opener was Dez Bryant, who lobbied to get the start after foot injuries ruined his 2015 season. Bryant mostly looked like his old self, hauling in two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. The Romo-Bryant connection is vital for Dallas’ playoff hopes, so seeing the receiver healthy and making big plays is certainly reassuring for Cowboys fans.
