When Lady Gaga takes the stage for the halftime show, there might be less pressure on her than the producers.

Lady Gaga takes the stage, but will anyone be joining her?

That’s because this is the first halftime show back in Houston since Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s, uh, wardrobe malfunction. It’s been 13 years since that fateful performance, but people don’t forget.
(Though, the segue from Nelly and P. Diddy to Kid Rock during that same show would be nice to block out, too, if we could.)
In the years following that episode, the halftime show format changed from a medley of superstars parading across the stage to solo acts such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyonce.
More recently, however, the halftime show has featured numerous “surprise” guests popping in. Bruno Mars brought out the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2014, Katy Perry was joined by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott in 2015, and Coldplay brought back Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Mark Ronson last year.
The trend is certainly moving back toward the days of super shows we had in the early 2000s. All of which could come full circle this Sunday in Houston.
Lady Gaga is certainly eccentric enough to have a bunch of surprises in store for halftime viewers — like, perhaps, drones? — and with Super Bowl becoming a bigger spectacle every year, it only makes sense to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
The 2004 Super Bowl in Houston turned the halftime show from a simply exciting collection of talent on stage to a “what will they do next?” thriller.
Sure, the internet will find its fair share of images to meme, but these shows are still more than that. They’re normally a snapshot of the year in culture — there’s plenty to comment on this time around. Couple that with the fact that Lady Gaga is widely known for her philanthropy and activism and she hinted that might get a little political.
“I believe in the spirit of equality and the spirit of this country as one of love and compassion and kindness,” Gaga said. “My performance will uphold those philosophies.”
On the music side of things, Lady Gaga has recorded songs with Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, Tony Bennett, Wale, Elton John, Flo Rida, and New Kids on the Block. So there are a number of potential acts who could join her on stage — though the only one confirmed is Bennett, who will help introduce her in a brief video before she takes the stage.
Either way, just as it has been for years now, the halftime show is as must-see as the game itself.
