The Super Bowl is big business for sportsbooks. CG Technology, an operator out of Las Vegas, learned that Friday when a bettor threw down a $1.1 million wager on the Falcons.
Super Bowl 2017 odds: Bettor wagers $1.1 million on underdog Falcons
The bet will pay off $1 million if Atlanta upsets New England.
The bet took Atlanta and the 3-point spread, meaning Matt Ryan’s team doesn’t have to win to pay off $1 million to the anonymous gambler who placed it. If the Falcons lose by two points or fewer or upset the Patriots, he or she will earn a seven-figure return on his or her investment.
While the company’s biggest bet is on Atlanta, the majority of its point spread wagers have favored New England to win its fifth Super Bowl. More than 60 percent of the bets CG Technology has taken — including one worth $200,000 — prognosticate a Patriot win Sunday.
Those bettors got a boost Sunday. Madden NFL picked New England to win a dramatic game in its simulation, a prediction that’s been correct nine of the last 13 years. If the video game proves correct in 2017, some anonymous high roller is going to be out $1.1 million.
