Who is going to win the NFC East?

The Giants are out, but the three-team race for the NFC East title is wide open.

There was a chance Week 12 was going to sort out the NFC East some. Instead, wins for the Cowboys and Eagles squeezed the NFL’s most jumbled division even tighter with five weeks left to play.

The only thing that got decided is that the New York Giants are probably toast.

Through 12 weeks, these are the current NFC East standings, with the divisional records for each team in parentheses:

  1. Cowboys: 6-5, (3-1)
  2. Washington: 6-5, (2-1)
  3. Eagles: 5-6, (2-1)
  4. Giants: 3-8, (0-4)

Wins over Washington and Philadelphia in two of the last three weeks vaulted the Cowboys into the top spot, but the race is far from over. With five regular season games left for each — and five more NFC East vs. NFC East duels coming in December — it’s still very much in the air:

The best and worst of Week 12

Dallas Cowboys, 55 percent chance

The Cowboys finally have a rhythm.

After slaloming between wins and losses in the first half of the season, Dallas found a way to string together three consecutive victories in the last three weeks to climb to first place in the division.

Ezekiel Elliott has three straight games over 120 rushing yards for the first time since October of his rookie year. He’s been helped by the arrival of Amari Cooper, who has also helped Dak Prescott to play efficient, mistake-free football.

But five of the Cowboys’ six wins came against teams with losing records. In the six games they’ve played against teams with winning records, the Cowboys are 1-5. The only win was a 31-23 win on Thanksgiving against Washington, who was led by Colt McCoy.

In the next three weeks, Dallas has two tough matchups against the Saints and Colts, as well as a rematch against the Eagles. Win at least two of those games, and the Cowboys will probably be set up to cruise to the NFC East title — especially with games against the Buccaneers and Giants to finish the season.

The Cowboys have the inside track to the division crown, but the next three weeks are time to prove they deserve it.

Washington, 34 percent chance

Even before Alex Smith suffered a devastating leg injury and was replaced in the starting lineup by Colt McCoy, Washington looked primed for a fall from grace.

The offense averages 20 points per game and has dealt with a revolving door of offensive linemen due to injuries. Washington’s 5-2 start to the year was mostly due to defense, but the unit looked pretty shaky in November.

Washington enters December having lost three of its last four. The only got a win came against the Buccaneers, who somehow managed to turn 501 yards of total offense into just three points.

The silver lining in all of this is that the offense really isn’t much different with McCoy in the lineup. Smith had only 10 touchdowns in 10 games and wasn’t leading Washington to many points. The 23 points and 331 yards the offense found in McCoy’s first start were the team’s third- and sixth-best totals of the year.

Washington can still be the team that started the year well out in front of the NFC East. What will loom large are the results of two games against the Eagles in Weeks 13 and 17. In between are winnable matchups against the Giants, Jaguars, and Titans.

At 6-5, the season is far from over for Washington.

Philadelphia Eagles, 20 percent chance

It’s been difficult to figure out why the Eagles aren’t back out in front of the NFC East.

Carson Wentz recovered from an ACL tear as well as the team could’ve possibly hoped, and he’s back to being the player who almost won the NFL MVP award a year ago. But everything about the team has just been average, at best.

Its stacked defensive line is giving up 4.7 yards per carry, and a secondary decimated by injuries is No. 28 in the NFL in passing yards allowed. Offensively, the Eagles have struggled to run the ball and the addition of Golden Tate hasn’t solved the inability to find big plays.

But through all those stumbling blocks, the Eagles are still 5-6 and nipping at the heels of the leaders. With games against Washington and Dallas in the next two weeks, Philadelphia has a chance to take the top spot soon too.

After that are tough matchups against the Rams and Texans, before a rematch in Week 17 with Washington.

Given their consistent inconsistency, it’s tough to trust the Eagles to finish with enough wins to get into the playoffs. But it’s not easy to rule them out either. The next two weeks should finally give us answers.

New York Giants, 1 percent chance

The Giants’ shot at the NFC East was probably flushed away when they blew a 19-3 lead against the Eagles this week. Philadelphia’s game-winning field goal in the final minute dropped the Giants to 3-8 and guaranteed they won’t have a winning season.

Even if New York ends the season with five straight wins, it’ll be 8-8 with a 2-4 record in the division. That will almost definitely mean it loses any tiebreaker.

But it’s not entirely impossible. The Giants have played better since their bye week and were close to beating the Eagles to make it three straight wins. If — a big if — the Giants can win out, that would include victories over Washington and Dallas. Maybe that’d be enough to knock the teams under .500.

That almost definitely won’t happen. The Giants’ realistic chances at the playoffs ended Sunday. Now, it’s a three-team race for the NFC East crown.
