They slowed down in the second half, but the Kansas City Chiefs built themselves enough of a lead in the opening two frames to down the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round of the playoffs on Saturday. The Chiefs played a great game on both sides of the ball, and came out on top, 31-13.
Colts vs. Chiefs 2019 results: Recap, highlights & more from Kansas City win
The Chiefs dominated the Colts on Saturday to advance to the AFC Championship. We have all the highlights and info you need from the game.

Kansas City scored 14 points in the first quarter and another 10 points in the second, while the Colts didn’t manage a single first down until the closing minutes of the second quarter. With Kansas City’s spotty defense this season, many thought the Colts would be a lot tougher to contain offensively, especially with the strong play of Andrew Luck, the likely comeback player of the year.
Instead, it was Luck who couldn’t get anything done for most of the game, with many of his passes going off the hands of his receivers or being batted down by Kansas City’s defense. They also sacked Luck three times and hit him many more than that. To make matters even worse for Indianapolis, Adam Vinatieri missed a short field goal and an extra point attempt.
Mahomes finished 27-of-41 for 278 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He did rush for a touchdown, while Damien Williams picked up 129 yards and a touchdown. Luck completed 19 of 36 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown, while the Colts as a team rushed for just 87 yards. Travis Kelce led the way in receiving for Kansas City, with seven catches for 108 yards.
Dee Ford had a sack, while Justin Houston had two of them for the Chiefs.
Below, you can see the live blog as it happened from Saturday’s first divisional playoff game.
Chiefs 31, Colts 13, 2:00, 4th Quarter: Killing clock time for the Chiefs — they start with three consecutive runs, picking up a first down in the process. But after another couple runs, they had to punt on a 4th-and-3. But the Colts can’t help themselves, and are called for running into the kicker, extending the drive for Kansas City. Williams runs the ball four more times, including one for 24 yards and one for 6 yards that went for a touchdown. The extra point is good and this one is just about done!
Chiefs 24, Colts 13, 5:25, 4th Quarter: The Colts put together a good drive, with Mack rushing for 20 yards, then 11 yards. Luck found Rogers for 12 yards, and then hit Hilton for a 29-yard touchdown, but Vinatieri, shockingly, missed the extra point!
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, 8:35, 4th Quarter: The Chiefs were driving at the start of the fourth, but Mahomes took a sack and they had to punt, giving Indianapolis the ball at their own 17-yard line. A false start and three incomplete passes later, and they punted it. Two runs and a sack for the Chiefs had them punt it as well. Indianapolis is running out of time to make something happen.
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, END 3rd Quarter: The Colt actually picked up another first down and put together a promising drive. Luck hit Inman for 20 yards, and then T.Y. Hilton for 11 yards. But he also took a 12-yard sack and ate a holding penalty, so the Colts had to punt. Watkins quickly fumbled after a catch for the Chiefs, and it was recovered by Indianapolis. Then Luck was sacked for a loss of 9 yards and Kansas city recovered! End third quarter.
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, 3:45, 3rd Quarter: Well how about that, both teams exchange punts for once. The Chiefs had a false start stall their drive. Still 24-7.
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, 8:40, 3rd Quarter: The Colts got the opening kickoff, so the Chiefs receive to start the second half. And they begin marching — a 9-yard pass to Watkins, a Williams run for 11 yards, and 11-yard pass to Dieter, a 15-yard pass to Kelce and then some short runs from Williams. On 3rd-and-10, the Colts were caught offsides, but ultimately, the Chiefs were facing a 4th-and-5. They went for it, but Mahomes was sacked, giving the Colts the ball at about their own 40-yard line, until an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushes them back 15 yards.
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, END 2nd Quarter: Well, that sure was an end to the half. After getting the ball, Andrew Luck finally started to complete some passes, hitting Ebron and Inman for 21 and then 12 yards. He also hit Rogers for 11 yards, then Inman again for 13 more. That ultimately set up an Adam Vinatieri field goal attempt — but it’s no good from just 23 yards out. Yeah .. Ouch.
Chiefs 24, Colts 7, 1:40 of 2nd Quarter: The Chiefs got the ball back after allowing the punt-block-touchdown, and after a few plays, the game is stopped briefly while Andy Reid yells at some Chiefs fans to stop throwing snowballs, and he gives a lecture to the referees as well. On the drive, Williams had a rush for 7 yards, and Mahomes had some nice completions, including a big third-down 15-yard reception by Kelce. Eventually, Mahomes scrambled in for a 4-yard touchdown with under two minutes in the first half!
Chiefs 17, Colts 7, 5:56 of 2nd Quarter: Remember that last update, where I mentioned I was starting all thee updates with Colts three-and-outs? Well ... THE Colts had another three-and-out, and the Chiefs began marching once ag— oh, maybe not. They get called for holding and are pushed back to their own 19-yard-line and it’s a Chiefs punt! Imagine that! AND IT’S BLOCKED! Najee Goode blocks it and it’s recovered by Pascal for a Colts touchdown!
Chiefs 17, Colts 0, 12:13 of 2nd Quarter: Somehow, I expect most updates to this live blog will include a note that the Colts quickly went three-and-out. Because they did, with Justin Houston picking up a 3-yard sack to force the punt on 3rd-and-2. Mahomes hit Kelce for 14 yards, then again for 16 yards. The first quarter ended with Kansas City in Indianapolis territory. On a 3rd-and-8 from the Indianapolis 29-yard like, Mahomes completes a pass for 10 yards. Eventually, they settled for the field goal.
Chiefs 14, Colts 0, 6:38 of 1st Quarter: Another Colts drive ended with another three-and-out, after three consecutive passes were batted down by the defense. So the Chiefs got the ball back at their own 34-yard line. The Chiefs managed to pick up a first down, but then faced an early 4th-and-1. They brought in the heavy set, and Williams picked up the first and a whole lot more. And from there it didn’t take long for a touchdown, as Tyreek Hill ran the ball to the left side for a 36-yard touchdown. Gosh dang he’s fast!
Chiefs 7, Colts 0; 10:05 of 1st Quarter: The Colts received the ball first, but couldn’t get anything done after losing 3 yards on the opening play. They had to punt, and the Chiefs didn’t take long before marching down the field, helped by a 60-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce and a 20-yard pass to Sammy Watkins. Damien Williams took advantage of the coverage spacing out to rush in a 10-yard touchdown and the Chiefs have the lead!
We’re here with our live blog, posting highlights and updates as Saturday’s divisional playoff game between the Colts and Chiefs takes off! Keep refreshing that page!
The Indianapolis Colts made it into the postseason as a wild card team, and they went out and dominated their divisional rivals, the Houston Texans, in impressive fashion. Now the Colts will have an even tougher task: slowing down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round. They’re set to play on Saturday, beginning at 4:35 p.m. ET on NBC (live streaming via FuboTV, NBC Sports).
Playing the Texans for the third time this season after splitting the first two, Indianapolis halted Deshaun Watson and made him uncomfortable early and often. Andrew Luck tossed a pair of touchdowns, and Marlon Mack went off for 148 rushing yards and a touchdown. As usual, T.Y. Hilton had a good game against Houston with five receptions for 85 yards.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs were sitting at home, enjoying their first-round bye. They also had a relatively late bye in the regular season, in Week 12, but went 3-2 after said bye.
Kansas City finished the regular season at 12-4, and it’s largely due to the ridiculously impressive play from Mahomes. In his first season as a starter, Mahomes completed 66 percent of his passes for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while being sacked 26 times.
The sack number is the most interesting, given the Colts sacked Watson three times and hit him several other times — a recurring problem for the Texans this season. But Kansas City has a great offensive line, and if the Colts can’t get the pressure they need, it’s very likely Mahomes will carve up their defense as he’s done all season. Mahomes was only held to 1 or fewer touchdowns twice in the regular season, and threw for over 300 yards 10 times.
Andrew Luck, though, might be the comeback player of the year after he missed 2017 with injury. He played in all 16 games this season, completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 4,593 yards, 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Despite Mahomes having the better season, it might be easier for the Colts, with their 11th-ranked defense, to stop him than it will for the Chiefs to stop Luck. That’s because the Chiefs ranked 31st in the league in total defense, and were in a number of shootouts this season.
