Danny Briere spoke with the media on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, just a few minutes before his team took on the Carolina Hurricanes -- without him in the lineup thanks to his three game suspension.
Danny Briere ‘Shocked,’ Angry About Three-Game Suspension
Briere was “shocked” that he was handed a three-game suspension.
“After everything else, after all the suspensions that have been handed the last couple years and this year, honestly, I didn’t think I was gonna get a game,” Briere said. “Then I thought, ‘OK, yes, I’m a repeat offender, he’ll probably give me a game.’ ”
But he was stunned to get three – and said it was possible when asked if he thought the third game was because the Flyers played the Islanders again Saturday.
“It’s possible. But what am I gonna do? Am I gonna go and fight their whole team? I’ve had, what, two, three fights in my life, in my career,” he said. “It’s not like I’m gonna do anything physical even if I play against the Islanders, if that’s what they’re thinking.”
Briere added that his stick didn't catch the head of Islanders' forward Frans Nielsen and that the only mistake he made was that his stick was "up there." He said it wasn't a cross-check and that only his glove grazed the top of Nielsen's helmet.
“Is it worth three games for that?” Briere asked.
“I don’t think so.”
Briere also pointed out that Rick DiPietro speared him after the initial play, which did happen but was not seen in the YouTube clip of the incident that's circulated online.
