Darryl Sutter May Be Next Los Angeles Kings Head Coach, According To Reports

Darryl Sutter may be in line to be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. According to several reports, including one from Rich Hammond at LA Kings Insider, the Kings have reached out to the Calgary Flames for permission to speak with Sutter about their coaching vacancy. Those talks are ongoing and "significant," according to Hammond.

If the sides work out an agreement - Sutter would also have to reach a financial agreement with the Calgary Flames, in terms of the rest of his contract - Sutter could be announced as the Kings’ coach this week, although it’s unlikely that he would be behind the bench Thursday in Columbus.

Of course, the job isn’t completely vacant. John Stevens, an assistant under recently fired head coach Terry Murray, has the interim tag. It just doesn’t appear as though he’ll have it for long now. There’s no word on if he’d go back to an assistant role under Sutter. It’s too early to tell at this point.

Sutter has coached three NHL teams, seeing the most success with the Calgary Flames. In 2004, that team advanced to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
