NHL Playoffs 2011, Rangers Vs. Capitals: Neuvirth To Start Game 1 For Washington

There was some controversy as to whether the Caps “workhorse” this season, Michal Neuvirth (by virtue of starting 48 games, the most of any Caps goalie), or the playoff starter of the past two years, Semyon Varlamov, would get the call in goal for Washington in Game 1.

Well, that question has been answered from one of the direct sources himself. Michal Neuvirth announced at practice today that he will be starting Game 1 of the Capitals series against the New York Rangers.

This will be the first career playoff action for the 22-year old from the Czech Republic. He has backstopped the Hershey Bears of the AHL to two straight Calder Cups, which included a playoff MVP award in 2009. Neuvirth went 27-12-4 with the Capitals this season, with a 2.45 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.

There were some Caps fans who felt that perhaps Varlamov -- who sat out a good portion of the season with an injury -- might get the chance, but it will be Michal Neuvirth vs. Henrik Lundqvist in net for Wednesday’s Game 1.
