On Friday night, the Tampa Bay Lightning displayed their firepower early, then held off the Pittsburgh Penguins for long enough to secure a 5-1 win. With this victory, the Lightning tie the first-round Stanley Cup with the Pens at a game apiece.
The Lightning jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead, courtesy of goals from Eric Brewer, Vincent Lecavalier, and Nate Thompson. Ryan Malone added a goal in the second period, and Mattias Ohlund scored an afterthought empty-net goal in the final minutes of the game.
Craig Adams was the only Penguin to score. The Pens gave themselves plenty of chances -- they made 36 shots on goal, dwarfing Tampa Bay’s 21 -- but weren’t able to find a way around Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson.
The Lightning are looking to win their first playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup finals in 2004. The Pens, meanwhile, are a year removed from a loss in the conference semifinals.
