Bruins Vs. Capitals, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 2: Benoit Pouliot Forces Overtime

Well, at least they scored before overtime in Game 2.

The Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals are again headed to the extra session Saturday afternoon. The Capitals took the lead on an ugly Troy Brouwer goal late in the second period but, at the 12:13 mark of the third, an even odder, uglier goal kept the home team alive.

The Capitals defense has been pretty solid all game long, but Dennis Wideman and Jeff Schultz each lost track here. Wideman takes Chris Kelly out of the play along the boards, but that leaves Brian Rolston with an easy route to the puck. Schultz was caught flat-footed as well, which allowed Pouliot to grab the loose puck in front of Holtby, who left his net in an attempt to compensate from the leaky defensive coverage.

Overtime will yet again hinge on which team cracks first. The Capitals have been a bit stronger offensively than they were in Game 1, but the trends don’t necessarily matter. The team that makes the first mistake in OT will likely head to Washington for Game 3 with a loss on their back.
