John Tortorella Timeout A Turning Point For Rangers In First Period

Patrik Elias made the score 3-0 for the Devils about midway through the first period. In the latter half of that period, however, the Rangers came to play. A John Tortorella timeout immediately following the Devils' second goal seemed to be a bit of a turning point for New York, as they really started to assert themselves afterward.

From the timeout to the end of the period, New York took 14 attempts at the Devils' goal. One of them went in the goal behind Martin Brodeur. The Devils took just nine attempts at the Rangers' net, many coming in one shift late in the period.

New Jersey held off the Rangers’ charge and survived to the end of the period, so it’ll be interesting to see how things hold up momentum-wise as the second begins.
