Tyler Myers is struggling in Buffalo

Tyler Myers is off to a pretty bad start to the 2013-14 season for the Buffalo Sabres.

The Buffalo Sabres are off to a brutal start this season and there is perhaps no player struggling more than defenseman Tyler Myers.

Here’s a quick example as to how things are going for him right now.

This play comes from the first period of Thursday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it features an ill-advised pinch from Myers in the offensive zone that results in an odd-man rush the other way. Marian Gaborik buried it for his second goal of the game.

Columbus scored three goals in the first period of Thursday’s game, and Myers was on the ice for all of them. Even worse, through the first 13 periods of the 2013-14 season the Sabres had allowed 11 even-strength goals (excluding empty-nets and penalty shots), Myers was on the ice for seven of them.

Obviously, that’s bad. And it’s probably not the type of play the Sabres were expecting from him when they signed him to a seven-year, $38.5 million contract prior to the 2012-13 season.

These aren’t new struggles, either. Myers’ performance has declined pretty much every season since his breakout rookie season. Not only has his defensive game been a mess at times, the offense that made him such a young star earlier in his career has badly regressed to the point that he’s recorded just 31 points in his past 98 games. Keep in mind, he had 48 during in 82 games during his rookie season and 37 in 80 games in his second season.
