Dallas Stars claim Dustin Jeffrey off waivers, send Aaron Rome to AHL

Are the Stars about to trade Vernon Fiddler?

The Dallas Stars claimed Pittsburgh Penguins forward Dustin Jeffrey off waivers Sunday, adding some valuable depth to their bottom six.

Dallas assigned defenseman Aaron Rome to the Texas Stars to make room for the move.

The timing of this move is curious. On the surface, the Stars appear to have plenty of forward depth in their bottom six. But considering forward Vernon Fiddler reportedly asked Stars management for a trade last week, this move might indicate Fiddler's request is being taken seriously.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Fiddler is unhappy with his role as a bottom-six checking forward and approached General Manager Jim Nill and the coaching staff about his ice time last week. Stars coach Lindy Ruff acknowledged the discussion on Wednesday but declined to elaborate. But where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

At any rate, the Stars are getting a decent forward from the Penguins in Jeffrey. Jeffrey has only one assist through 10 games this season in a limited role in Pittsburgh.
