NHL Wednesday: Pens, Caps renew rivalry; Old people on ice in Anaheim

This is what can only be described as a bicycle kick save. It’s pretty spectacular, and it’s the best save we’ve seen across the NHL on Wednesday.

That save kept the game scoreless until Columbus’ Nick Foligno beat Berra with a rocket of a shot just a few minutes later to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead.

The real star of this play though is the puck movement. Malkin, to Kunitz, to Neal, to Crosby. What is a goalie supposed to do about that?

And what sort of in-depth analysis did we get?

A fart noise.

That’s a rather low percentage shot from Martin, but it seemed to catch Holtby off guard. It’s hard to tell whether or not the shot was deflected, or if he just didn’t get a good look at it.

They’ve done most of their damage at even-strength and on the power play, but in the first period of their game on Wednesday against Minnesota, MacArthur and Turris they were making plays shorthanded.

Here is MacArthur setting up Turris with a nifty between-the-legs pass for his sixth goal of the season. It might be one of the best passes you see this season.

Even though he’s been playing strong hockey and piling up a lot of assists (he’s assisted on 10 of Pittsburgh’s past 18 goals), Malkin remains stuck on three goals this season and hasn’t scored one in 14 games, and even that one was an empty-net goal. He hasn’t scored a goal with a goalie in net in 15 games. Will that streak end on Wednesday?

In 12 road games this season the Devils have scored more than three goals just two times (they scored four both times, and in one of those games the fourth goal came by way of a shootout win). It’s probably no surprise then that they have only won three games away from the Prudential Center this season. Can they find some offense in Anaheim?

When the NHL pushed realignment last year, it was the hope the new format would help foster and rekindle some of the league’s best rivalries.

The Capitals and Penguins certainly seem to be two of the teams the league had in mind, as the two meet as divisional rivals for the first time in 20 years Wednesday night at Verizon Center, which didn’t even exist the last time they shared space in a division.
