Mike Green has done a lot of wonderful, productive things over the years for the Washington Capitals. His first period performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night was not one of them.

In a period that saw the Capitals get outscored, 3-1, and outshot, 12-7, Green was at the center of just about everything that went wrong for the Capitals (and everything that went right for the Lightning).
In six first period shifts that accounted for just under four minutes of ice-time, Green took five penalties totaling 18 minutes (a double-minor for high-sticking, a minor for tripping, another minor for high-sticking, and a 10-minute misconduct on top of that), and was on the ice for a goal against as the lone man back on this 2-on-1 rush.
The Lightning scored on two of the power play opportunities while Green was in the penalty box.
Heavens to betsy that is one bad period of hockey. Even Alex Ovechkin’s fiancé was unimpressed.
