Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov stood before a judge on Monday afternoon where he was formally charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. Varlamov answered questions with yes or no answers and will remain free on bond, according to a report by the Associated Press. In addition, the judge informed Varlamov that he is not allowed to drink alcohol or possess firearms.

Semyon Varlamov appeared before a judge on Monday afternoon and is expected to enter a formal plea on Jan. 22.
Varlamov will officially enter a plea at his next scheduled court hearing on Jan. 22.
The goaltender is facing charges from his girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, who has alleged that Varlamov beat her after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. She has since said that this wasn’t an isolated incident and that several other occasions of abuse have occurred. Varlamov is not permitted to be near Vavrinyuk per the terms of a restraining order, which the judge upheld on Monday.
