New Varlamov lawsuit claims multiple beatings

    Doug Pensinger

The nine-page lawsuit, first reported by TMZ and obtained in full by NBC Sports, details at least four separate instances of alleged domestic abuse and subsequent promises from Varlamov that the attacks would stop. Vavrinyuk is seeking monetary and punitive damages, citing a reduction in her past and current income, injury to her reputation, medical costs and both emotional and bodily injury as a result of Varlamov’s actions.

In one particularly graphic description of an alleged crime, the lawsuit claims that during a June 2013 vacation, “[Varlamov’s] repeated attacks caused Vavrinyuk to bleed all over the hotel room floor and furnishings.” It also claims that “Varlamov pleaded with Vavrinyuk to help him clean” and that she did so, “but not before photographing some of the bloody mess.”

Translated by Yahoo! contributor Dmitry Chesnokov and posted to Twitter, the quote details that Varalmov’s only mistake was getting together with the woman, via Chesnokov:

This isn’t the first instance of “cultural differences” being referenced in this situation, as Varlamov allegedly told Vavrinyuk that he would have beaten her more severely had they been in Russia. According to Vavrinyuk, Varlamov has assaulted her on four or five different occasions with the most extreme incident resulting in her losing consciousness.

Roy on Varlamov start: ‘Why wait?’

    Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Despite charges of assault and kidnapping, which resulted in Varlamov spending a night in jail and standing before a judge on Thursday morning, the Avalanche have decided to attempt a return to normalcy by allowing their No. 1 goaltender to return to work. Of course, Varlamov is innocent until proven guilty and has the right to live his life.

According to Dater, Roy compared the decision to when he was traded to the Avalanche in 1995 and started in a game the following night, once again citing his mantra of “why wait?” Varlamov’s situation, however, is far more significant and exceptionally more serious.

    Despite arrest, Varlamov will play

    Doug Pensinger

Varlamov was charged with assault and kidnapping on Thursday in relation to a domestic situation involving his girlfriend on Tuesday. The goaltender turned himself into local authorities on Wednesday and posted $5,000 bail after standing before a judge on Thursday. He is permitted to travel as per the terms of his release and a restraining order has been put into place.

Head coach Patrick Roy pleaded ignorance during his post-practice media availability on Thursday and abstained from comment with the exception of expressing a willingness to heed the wishes of local authorities. Given Varlamov’s ability to travel, the organization decided not to recall a goaltender from the American Hockey League.
