Brunner’s nightmarish debut with New Jersey just got rougher.
Brunner suffered the injury in the first period against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. With just under three minutes left in the period, Ducks defenseman Mark Fistric checked Brunner hard into the boards. After a visit with the trainers on the ice for a few minutes, Brunner was helped to the dressing room by his teammates and didn't return to the game.
This is just the latest piece of bad news in a season full of them for Brunner, who signed a two-year, $5 million contract with New Jersey this summer after a few years in Detroit. Brunner has just eight goals and 13 points in 32 games this season. He’s struggled to adjust to New Jersey’s chip-and-chase system after years playing Detroit’s puck possession style, to the point that he was a healthy scratch just a couple of weeks ago.
However, Brunner had started to pick up the pace with four goals in the last five games before the injury.
