NHL Saturday: Wings outlast Maple Leafs in shootout

If Saturday night was any indication of what’s to come, we’re in for a special Winter Classic.

Well, at least for fans of the Red Wings. The first episode of HBO’s 24/7 opened with a monologue on the long-suffering nature of Maple Leafs fandom, and at this rate, the next few weeks aren’t going to change the tone around Toronto.

Instead of shedding tears, a disgruntled Edmonton fan decided to shed his/her jersey.

The good news here is that he got up rather quickly, which might indicate his visor caught most of the blow. The NHL mandated all incoming rookies must wear visors this season, which might have saved Jones from serious injury.

Is that desire or dissatisfaction? It’s hard to read into a single comment, but you can imagine Neuvirth being frustrated to some extent.

This is just the latest piece of bad news in a season full of them for Brunner, who signed a two-year, $5 million contract with New Jersey this summer after a few years in Detroit. Brunner has just eight goals and 13 points in 32 games this season. He’s struggled to adjust to New Jersey’s chip-and-chase system after years playing Detroit’s puck possession style, to the point that he was a healthy scratch just a couple of weeks ago.

However, Brunner had started to pick up the pace with four goals in the last five games before the injury.
