Alexander Edler suspended 2 games for hit on Mike Smith

The league ruled that it was textbook charging and worthy of a suspension.

As expected, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler has been suspended two games by the NHL Department of Player Safety for charging Phoenix Coyotes Mike Smith on Thursday night.

Edler initially received a five-minute major for the play (and a good bit of violence from Coyotes players), but the NHL has decided more punishment was necessary.

Here’s the video explanation from the NHL:

Here’s some of what Shanny said, for the video-impaired:

While we agree that Edler has no malicious intent on this play, we believe he does not make any effort to minimize or avoid contact.

That, combined with the fact that it was textbook charging on a goaltender who was injured on the play, was enough for the NHL to bench Edler for two games.
