Bruins make Milan Lucic a healthy scratch

A player who will be making no less $5.5 million a year for the Boston Bruins starting in 2013-14 will be a healthy scratch for the team today.

The Bruins came out for warmups for the game today against the Pittsburgh Penguins with out winger Milan Lucic, who has played in 41 of 42 Boston games this season. Lucic will be a healthy scratch for the matinee. It’s a long road down for a player the Bruins counted on to be a key part of their Stanley Cup Championship in 2011.

Lucic has been ineffective at times during this short season, with just six goals and 18 assists in 41 games. That’s unacceptable for a player who’s totals the last two seasons were 30 and 26 goals, and 62 and 61 points. Lucic also begins a three-year, $18 million extension with the Bruins next season, so the team is no doubt concerned.

Much-hyped Swedish forward Carl Soderberg will play in Lucic’s absence. He’ll be making his NHL debut today.
