Kings vs. Sharks Game 3 update: Sharks head to overtime with huge opportunity

San Jose will have a lengthy 5-on-3 as overtime begins in Game 3.

Los Angeles and San Jose played another scoreless third period, but the final few seconds of the frame has set Game 3 up for a wild overtime finish. The Kings and Sharks are tied at 1-1.

The third period of Game 3 played out about the same as the previous two periods. Slowly but surely this series is beginning to look a lot like the Kings-Blues series in the first round: superb defending and goaltending, resulting in a low-scoring hockey game.

Los Angeles had their best offensive period of the game in the final frame, testing Antti Niemi multiple times with good scoring chances. Slava Voynov nearly got a fluttering shot through Niemi from distance midway through the period, but the Sharks quickly cleared the rebound. San Jose is outshooting Los Angeles 38-27, and the 1-1 score is a testament to the brilliant netminding at both ends.

The final few minutes of the third might cost L.A. Robyn Regehr was called for hooking at 19:18, and Trevor Lewis was called for goaltender interference on this shorthanded chance with five seconds left in regulation.
