Kings vs. Sharks Game 6 update: Joe Thornton gives San Jose the 1-0 lead

Both teams had several power-play opportunities in the first period, but San Jose had the only goal.

Game 6 between the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks began with the Sharks needing a win to stay alive and head back to Los Angeles for Game 7. After the game's first 20 minutes, San Jose looked to be in good shape.

The game was scoreless until Joe Thornton converted on a 5-on-3 power play for the Sharks:

The power-play goal came with Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar both in the box for separate minor penalties.

The Kings would get their own chance to score on the power play just a short time later, but Drew Doughty fired a shot off the crossbar and it remained 1-0. Dwight King and Anze Kopitar would both hit posts of their own in the game's first 20 minutes, making for three very close calls for the Kings in the first.

The Sharks would be down a defenseman early after Justin Braun went down to the ice with no one around him and then headed to the dressing room for evaluation. He would return to the San Jose bench in the final minute of the period.

The Sharks led, 1-0, at the first intermission. The Kings led the period in shots, 9-8.
