The San Jose Sharks led Los Angeles Kings 1-0 to start the second period after Joe Thornton scored the game's only goal in the first. Each team scored once in the middle frame, and the Sharks held a 2-1 lead at the second intermission.

The Sharks took a 2-0 lead early in the second, but the Kings would get a goal of their own later in the period.
The Sharks struck first in the second period when T.J. Galiardi beat Jonathan Quick with a wrist shot from the face-off circle:
Antti Niemi had the secondary assist on the goal. After it was scored, some on Twitter were speculating that the puck hit a player on the bench on the way up the ice, which should have resulted in a whistle, but replays seemed to show Kyle Clifford knocking the puck down:
The Sharks had a four-minute power play a few minutes later after Justin Williams drew blood on Marc-Edouard Vlasic with a high stick, but the Kings were strong on the kill and San Jose couldn't convert.
Dustin Brown scored at 13:53 of the second period after firing a shot that deflected off San Jose's Tommy Wingels:
Brown’s goal made it a 2-1 game, and would be the final tally of the period. Shots were tied at 17 at the end of the second period.
