Blackhawks trade Brandon Pirri to Panthers for draft picks

Pirri had run out of time with Chicago.

The Florida Panthers continued to rebuild their already deep prospect pool on Sunday, trading two draft picks to the Chicago Blackhawks for center Brandon Pirri.

Chicago gets a 2014 third-round pick and a 2016 fifth-round pick in the deal, while the Panthers get a young center who has struggled to find his place in Chicago’s system.

Pirri was drafted 59th overall in 2009 by the Blackhawks and has 57 goals in three seasons with the Rockford Icehogs of the American Hockey League. He registered 75 points last season and was expected to crack Chicago’s roster this year.

Instead, Pirri was sent down before the Olympics after failing to impress in two weeks with the Blackhawks. When Chicago traded for Ottawa Senators forward Peter Regin, Pirri’s fate was sealed. He’ll likely get a longer leash with the weaker Panthers.
