Patrick Sharp scores flying goal on his birthday to open the scoring for the Stars

Not bad as birthday presents go.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The league leading Dallas Stars are doing their very best to forget a 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues last night thanks to some help from Patrick Sharp. The forward is celebrating his 34th birthday on this Sunday evening and added a goal late in the first period to help put Dallas up over the visiting Blues 1-0.

Captain Jamie Benn's dangle through the neutral zone started the play and finished with Sharp's leaping tap in that deflected off the back of netminder Brian Elliott before the Stars forward swatted the puck in on the rebound.

Here’s a slower view of the play, clearly showing Sharp’s initial shot hit the crossbar before sitting in the blue paint while the Dallas forward got a few whacks at it on the power play.
