Morning Skate: Low-balling is the latest chapter in Tampa Bay’s disgruntled player saga
But you’ve gotta start somewhere. Right?

Lace ‘em up. Time for the Morning Skate.
* * *
LOW-BALLED: The Lightning reportedly offered Steven Stamkos an eight-year, $65 million contract extension over the weekend. Which, at $8.5 million a season, seems low after Anze Kopitar signed in Los Angeles for $10 million a year. But hey, it can only go up from there, right?
DROUIN THE VILLAIN: Meanwhile, it’s worth considering whether Jonathan Drouin is a “bad guy” for making trade demands or is simply doing what he must under the NHL’s current structure.
NAME HIM BOBBY: A lucky young Senators fan is getting a new puppy all because Bobby Ryan scored last night.
NOT TOO SHABBY: That was part of an important win for the Senators, by the way. One of the few times all season Ottawa played a complete game.
TO THE PRESS BOX YOU GO: As expected, Kings forward Milan Lucic is suspended for one game after sucker punching a Coyotes defenseman on Saturday.
JUST WEAR A VISOR, MAN: Andrew Shaw took TWO pucks to the face in one game over the weekend. The result? Eighteen stitches and two swallowed teeth. Not worth it. Wear a damn visor.
LET IT GO: Apparently Jeremy Roenick’s feud with Patrick Marleau is alive and well. And that’s dumb.
SAME OLD BLUES: Surprise! St. Louis dropped another division game. The Blues are playing risky hockey and it’s simply not paying off.
HOCKEY BALL SCORES:
Senators 3, Rangers 0
Hurricanes 5, Flames 3
Blackhawks 2, Blues 0
Kings 3, Sharks 2 (OT)
LOOKING FOR MORE: The Stars need Cody Eakin to start pulling some of the weight.
NOT MUCH LEFT TO GIVE: Similarly, Detroit needs more from Brad Richards but there might not be enough left in his tank.
SNOW DAYS: The blizzard has knocked out much of the East Coast, and hockey players are showing up everywhere. The Islanders’ Thomas Greiss helped tow a stranded driver out of a ditch. And Alex Ovechkin was spotted getting extra gas for his neighbors.
IT’S ALL ON YOU: If the Flyers make the playoffs, it’ll be because Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier stepped up to carry them there.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: Relying on young, unproven players is a risky tactic that just might pay off for the Blue Jackets.
APPROACH WITH CAUTION: Please do not disturb the Dustin Byfuglien. It will hurt you.
