Morning Skate: The NHL’s John Scott nightmare is alive and well

And that’s a good thing.

You love hockey. You love SB Nation. You love reading hockey at SB Nation. Search your feelings. You know these things are true. But life’s too busy to browse the whole network for news. So, we’ve put all the hockey news in one convenient place for you. No research required.

Lace ‘em up. Time for the Morning Skate.

* * *

JOHN SCOTT DRAMA PERSISTS: And the NHL has no one to blame but themselves. The league probably figured that letting Scott play in the All-Star Game would quietly (and magically) make any conspiracies or bad PR go away.

They grossly misunderstood how the world works these days. On Thursday, Scott published his side of the story in The Players’ Tribune, and all but confirmed the league tried to bully him out of the All-Star Game. They even involved his kids! How sorry.

Keep an eye out on SB Nation for more on this story today.

SOLD OUT: Meanwhile, the John Scott All-Star Game shirts sold out a full four days before the event even began. But fans don’t want him there, right?

UNLIKELY HERO: John Scott has become a cult hero in hockey circles thanks to this All-Star Fiasco. He's the hero the All-Star Game needs, and the one it deserves.

THE UNHERALDED, PART 3: Writers from around the blogosphere are uniting to figure out which players in each division are the most under-appreciated. Today, the Atlantic Division is featured!

WITHIN THEIR RIGHT: One thing the league is right about is suspending players for deliberately skipping the All-Star Game. Love or hate the All-Star Game, it’s important for the league as a whole. Without the stars there, the league’s #brand suffers.

THEN AGAIN: Wouldn’t you skip the All-Star Game if you had to face the giant Velveeta cheese fountain monstrosity of doom in Nashville?

THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Those are the ones Blog Council answers every week. This time around, we wonder which Star Wars character best represents Canadiens coach Michel Therrien.

SOME PERSPECTIVE: The Dennis Wideman fiasco was random, confusing and scary. Matchsticks & Gasoline tries to parse out the situation from an official’s perspective.

SHOPPING TIPS: Our Predators blog scouted out all of the neat All-Star Game merchandise so you don't have to.

HOCKEY BALL SCORES:

None. It’s the All-Star Break. Come back later.

TIME TO MOVE ON: The Jets need to consider trading defenseman Tobias Enstrom, who's been with the franchise since its last days in Atlanta. This won't be an easy break-up, but it's worth exploring.

SHAKE IT UP, KEN: The Detroit Red Wings are close to becoming a legitimately dangerous team. But moves need to be made.

BETTER THAN NILL: Defending Big D looks back at all of the franchise-shaping moves the Stars’ GM made two years ago.

FIGHTING’S DOWN: It turns out that fighting majors across the league are at a 15-year low.
