Capitals vs. Flyers 2016 final score: Philadelphia extends playoff life with 2-1 victory

The Capitals couldn’t close the deal and will now head home with a 3-1 series lead.

The Flyers live to fight another day after securing a 2-1 victory in Game 4 against the Capitals.

Goaltender Michal Neuvirth, stepping in for normal starter Steve Mason, saved 31 shots in the game, including 12 in the third period.

Shayne Gostisbehere got the night started with another quick Flyers goal, on his 23rd birthday no less. The Flyers' rookie defenseman blasted the puck from the blue line for his first career playoff goal and gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Capitals head coach Barry Trotz challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but the one timer held up.

The first period ended with a scary collision after Scott Laughton tumbled into the boards and was stretchered off the ice. The forward was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

Philadelphia was able to double their lead to 2-0 on Andrew MacDonald's first goal of the postseason to start the middle frame. It was another long-range goal that beat Braden Holtby, this time with less traffic in front of his net almost four minutes into the second period.

T.J. Oshie made it a game for the Capitals, pounding in a rebound three minutes into the third period that made it 2-1. The forward was able to toe-drag the puck to safety before firing it over the outstretched legs of Neuvirth.

Despite tremendous Capitals pressure in the third period, the Flyers defense and Neuvirth were able to shut down Washington with just one goal to extend their series for at least another game.
