Hawaii Bowl 2013: Odds, picks and trends for Oregon State vs. Boise State

Oddsmakers have Oregon State as favorites, but the computer picks Boise State to extend its bowl winning streak. This story was provided to SB Nation by OddsShark.com.

The Boise State Broncos have won in each of their last four bowl appearances and are 4-1 SU and ATS over their last five. Oddsmakers, however, set the Hawaii Bowl odds in favor of the Oregon State Beavers, a team looking for its first bowl win since 2008.

Boise State (Mountain West, 8-4 SU, 6-6 ATS, 7-5 OU) suffered through its worst season in eight years, failing to reach 10 wins for the first time since 2005.

To make matters worse for the Broncos, the man responsible for building the program into the nationally recognizable brand that it is today is no longer with the team. Former head coach Chris Petersen left the team with a 92-12 SU record to take the Washington Huskies job, which could serve as a distraction for the players in this game.

After suffering a stunning loss as a 26-point favorite against Eastern Washington in their home opener, the Oregon State Beavers (Pac-12, 6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS, 7-5 OU) seemed to have their season back on track with a 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS run over the next six games.

But once the Beavers hit the tough part of their schedule, the season unraveled, ending in an 0-5 SU and 2-3 ATS skid. In the Beavers’ defense, Stanford, USC, Arizona State, Washington and Oregon are all excellent opponents.

Oregon State’s biggest issue was its defense, which finished 93rd in the nation in yards allowed, with 428.2 per game, and 95th in scoring defense, allowing 32.1 points per game. Boise State’s offense finished in the top 25 nationally in total yards and scoring and should be able to put up points on the Beavers.

But can the Broncos stop Oregon State’s passing attack? Boise State ranked 92nd nationally, allowing 248.4 passing yards per game, while Oregon State had a top-five passing attack, with 382.1 passing yards per game.

From the looks of these two offenses and defenses, there could be plenty of fireworks in Hawaii, with the total hovering around 63 in early wagering.

Trends:

Underdogs 6-2 ATS past 8 Hawaii Bowls
Boise State is 4-1 ATS past five bowl games
Oregon State lost five in a row to end the season

Computer Prediction: 44-32 Boise State (from the Odds Shark prediction computer)
