It's difficult to remember any serious chances Liverpool generated in today's Merseyside Derby, with Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta's goals going unanswered in Everton's 2-0 win. Fernando Torres has a weak headed chance in the first half while one second half chance was hit right at Tim Howard. There was never a moment where the crowd reacted as if a Liverpool goal was a real possibility.
Everton-Liverpool: Reds Never Wake-Up In 2-0 Loss To Rival Everton
Sunday’s 2-0 loss begs the question: When will Liverpool start to care? Today seemed the right stage for a turn-around. Just as, last year, Liverpool woke-up with a backs against the wall win over rival Manchester United, here Liverpool could have reaffirmed their authority over a local rival, keeping them in the drop while vaulting themselves above it. Instead, Roy Hodgson’s team gave a performance as disillusioned as any of their previous league efforts.
Because Liverpool was so poor, it was difficult to tell how good Everton was. Going forward, they weren't great, though they did convert on two of their three best chances (another by Jermaine Beckford was skied over the bar). At the back, the Toffees appeared solid, but against little resistance, their defense's performance was the least we could reasonably expected. The Toffees got the win, but in lieu of a stand-out performance from their side, it's possible Everton's struggles have not passed.
Regardless, Everton can now move forward on the back of consecutive wins, jumping from 16th to 11th place thanks to their win. Liverpool stays 18th, set to deal with another performance where nobody in the squad played with the needed desire or efficacy.
