Fulham opened the scoring in an unexpected way, with the post and Scott Carson's back converting Zoltan Gera's eighth minute chance. Eleven minutes later, West Bromwich Albion got an unexpected goal of their own, though it was the person, not the manner that made the second goal surprising.
West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Fulham: Youssuf Mulumbu Brings Baggies Back
Youssuf Mulumbu, who's had a strong year as a defensive midfielder for the Baggies, was able to get forward in the 19th minute. Attacker Chris Brunt found the Congolese midfielder in the middle of the area. Mulumbu's right-footed finish from beat Mark Schwarzer for West Brom's opener, pulling the hosts back even with the Cottagers.
Even before the score, West Brom had immediately responded to Fulham’s opener. Play had shifted toward Schwarzer’s goal, with Brom able to quickly move through and behind Fulham’s line. In that regard, the nature of West Brom’s equalizer was not surprising: a deep-sitting player jumping into open space in the box.
