Chelsea 2-0 Wolves, Final: With Drogba Back, Chelsea Secure Three Points At Home
Chelsea were the better team over the course of the full 90 minutes yet it was a match Wolves wouldn't have been totally out of order in had they figured out a way to steal a goal or two and a point away.
1-0 until late on, Wolves did well in maintaining their shape, defending Chelsea’s three-pronged attack and pushing forward on the counter attack themselves in a positive manner. For Wolves, it was a familiar and proud performance, yet also familiar in that they lost and continue to remain in the bottom three.
Playing just behind lone striker Kevin Doyle was a five man Wolves midfield that was effective enough in not conceding multiple goals yet lacked that overall balance needed to create clear cut chances. Always a difficult job at Stamford Bridge, especially considering how poignant Chelsea's attack has been this season.
Doyle was good without being great, the story of his time at Wolves while midfield support in the form of David Jones and Nenad Milijas showed signs of good football while attempting to stifle the likes of Michael Essien, Mikel and Yuri Zhirkov in the Chelsea midfield.
While Chelsea enjoyed the return of talisman Didier Drogba, they seem to equally miss the abilities of Frank Lampard linking play with the forward three. While Michael Essien's return to form seems more like a new summer signing for Chelsea, the Blues through John Terry at the back remain incredible in defense this season thus far having conceded only 2 goals in the league. Truly astonishing after 9 matches played.
The Blues sealed the match in the 81st when Salomon Kalou, just on for Florent Malouda, finished neatly past American keeper Marcus Hahnemann.
