Hugo Rodallega's strike out not go unanswered, either tactically or on the scoresheet. Instant chances from Bolton manager Owen Coyle led to a Johan Elmander equalizer seven minutes after the Latics had taken the lead, leaving the clubs' Greater Manchester derby drawn 1-1 in the 67th minute.
Wigan Athletic 1-1 Bolton Wanderers: Trotters’ Instant Response Sees Johan Elmander Equalize
The "movement" actually stared with a double substitution, with Owen Coyle responding to Bolton's control of play by bringing on forward Rodrigo Moreno and midfielder Matthew Taylor. The thinking appeared to be straight forward. If Wigan is going to allow up to pepper crosses into the area, Bolton would get one of their better crossers on while going to a three forward attack. The result, predictably, saw a cross lead to the tying goal.
A ball from the right flank was sent up after Taylor and Antolin Alcaraz contested the cross. Kevin Davies headed the ball back down for Taylor, though the ensuing battle saw a ball roll free for an oncoming Elmander. Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was a beat late coming for the ball, making the finish relatively easy for the lumbering Swede.
