Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy has been stretchered from the field at the DW with a potential major leg injury. Taken straight to the locker room, McCarthy's right leg was in a brace, with Mohamed Diamé immediately brought-on as a replacement.
The 19-year-old Ireland international went to ground after a challenge from Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba. The tackle was of sufficient severity to prevent television coverage from showing replays. After two minutes that saw everybody on the pitch gathered around in concern, McCarthy was finally played taken from the field.
McCarthy is in his second season at the DW. He has started every match this season for Roberto Martínez, playing all but 11 minutes.
