With rumors rampant that the Kansas City Wizards will be rebranded as Sporting KC as they move into their new soccer specific stadium next year, Birahim Diop seems intent on making sure the final game under the current moniker is one to remember.
MLS Final Week: Birahim Diop Scores Hat Trick, Chris Wondolowski Scores 18th Goal
The enigmatic forward scored his third goal of the match, the second MLS hat trick in as many weeks, on a wonder strike from just outside the penalty area. An San Jose own goal made the score 4-1 in stoppage time.
On the plus side for the Quakes, Chris Wondolowski moved ahead of Edson Buddle for the Golden Boot lead. Wondolowski scored his MLS-leading 18th goal.
Meanwhile in Colorado, Conor Casey has given the Rapids a 2-0 lead over Real Salt Lake in the 55th minute. Casey’s goal marks the sixth time this season that Casey and Cummings have scored in the same game and is the seventh time they have scored at least a point in the same game.
Assuming these results hold, Sunday’s games will be rendered essentially meaningless as the eight playoff spots will be locked in.
